The Council of Bureaucrats

Learning when to walk away

Dream Journal – 08/28/2026

I was standing in a large retail store where I worked as an associate. I felt a sense that I had an innocently mischievous persona at this job. I would do my work but I wasn’t shy about bringing fun to the experience or to my co-workers.

As I began to navigate this retail dreamscape, I felt some pressure outside of me. Specifically, it felt like a kind of bureaucratic pressure. It was rigid, humorless, and limited. Although I didn’t let it keep me from being myself, I could still sense this pressure being directed toward me.

The next thing I knew, I was on a long chain. This chain was attached to the bureaucrats that did not like me having such a playful spirit within their rigid system. Then the lawyer of the bureaucrats, who was also on the chain, came forward and said:

“That’s enough. You bend the rules too frequently. You cannot work and have fun at the same time. It’s not allowed so we are taking you to court.”

When she said this, I looked at her with understanding and a small smile. I didn’t want to go to court but I also accepted that I was stuck on this chain of bureaucrats so I had to go with the flow.

Now I’m in court and facing a Council of Bureaucrats. Their skin was pale and gray. They looked lifeless and without any joy. A member of their council stepped forward. He had this perfectly groomed head of shiny silver hair. Not a strand of it was out of place. The Council Member said:

“Time and time again you have warped the rules of your employment. Work is meant to be completed, not enjoyed. You are being tried for your crimes against your employer.”

He continued to speak more about the supposed “crimes” that I committed. Realistically, I knew that I did my job well and I was comfortable with bringing positive energy into my professional experience. I then saw that there was a problem with a fixture on the floor of the courtroom.

I decided to walk over to it and see if I could help. The Council Member was still lambasting me but I tuned him out. As I worked the problem by fixing the floor, I came to a realization. I don’t have to be attached to this bureaucratic experience any longer. I can leave.

So I stood up, looked at the silver-haired Council Member and said:

“If I put in my resignation, would that satisfy the council and my employer? This proceeding is ridiculous and I am no longer interested in being here.”

The Council Member was stunned. He had never experienced someone walk away with such detachment before. He was so used to fighting and pushing others into his rigid belief system that he didn’t know how to respond.

After a few moments, he realized that if I quit, his council and my employer would “win” the case. He said:

“Uh. Yeah. That...is fine. That will work.”

I then turned around and walked out of the courtroom without acknowledging him, or the council, any further. The chains I was wearing earlier were completely gone. I freed myself.

The moment I stepped out of the building I saw an old colleague of mine who I hadn’t seen in almost two decades. We immediately gravitated toward each other and began to catch up. We realized how much life we both had been through since we last saw each other. It was nice to know that we could pick up right where we left off.

My colleague then took a one-hundred-dollar bill out of his pocket and handed it to me. I explained that it was extremely kind of him to offer it since I was now out of work, but it was really unnecessary. He insisted that I be open to receiving it.

I took a moment, thanked him for this gift, and we continued to walk. As we did, I saw another one-hundred-dollar bill on the ground. I was in shock, picked it up, and thought that I should find who may have dropped it. Then my intuition stepped in. I heard:

“This money, this abundance, was put on your path. You can accept it without guilt. It is meant to be yours.”

So again, I took a moment, practiced gratitude for the experience, and continued to walk with my colleague. As we did, he found a five-dollar bill. Instead of putting it in his pocket, he folded it in half and threw it behind him. He had no attachment of “needing” or “wanting” the money so he left it on the path for someone else to find. When our walk came to an end, so did the dream. I remember feeling such a relief when I woke up.

In the dream, I didn’t allow a rigid system to keep me from living my life with joy. This dream reminded me that receiving doesn’t have to come with guilt. Neither does abundance need to become something I cling to.

Sometimes we receive what appears on our path, and sometimes we leave something behind for whoever comes next.
